A 7-member SIT has been set up to investigate cases of human trafficking in Haryana.

Chandigarh:

Haryana Interior Minister Anil Vij said Tuesday that a seven-member task force (SIT) had been established to investigate cases of human trafficking and fraud. immigration to the state.

This comes days after the cases were registered, following allegations by most of the 76 Haryana residents expelled from the United States that they were trafficked.

SIT will be headed by Inspector General of Police (IGP), Karnal Range, Bharti Arora, said Vij.

The other members of the team are IPS officers Nazneen Bhasin, Rahul Sharma, Himanshu Garg, Lokendra Singh, Shashank Kumar and Mohit Handa, he said.

According to the Minister, the SIT will investigate fully and take action in all cases related to the illegal sending of people abroad and trafficking in human beings.

Mr. Vij said that those who are sent abroad by illegal means often have pitiful stories to tell as they are taken along dangerous roads and risk torture along the way.

“Often these people tell stories of torture and the failure to distribute food or water,” he said.

The 76 Haryana residents who were expelled from the United States were part of a group of more than 160 Indians who arrived in Amritsar, Punjab on a special charter flight on May 19.

Most of the expelled Indian nationals entered the United States from their southern border with Mexico, after having exhausted all legal options. They were arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE while trying to enter the United States illegally.

Seventy-three cases have been recorded, most of those deported from the United States claiming to have been victims of “kabootarbazi” (trafficking in human beings), Vij said on Friday.
