Residents near an Oil India Limited oil well in Tinsukia’s Assam district were evacuated on Wednesday after an “eruption”. The Baghjan 5 well in Haut-Assam exploded in a crude oil fountain after the failure of pressure control systems.
Oil India said that around 10:30 am, the Baghjan 5 production well under Baghjan Oilfield of Oil India Limited in the district of Tinsukia suddenly became very active during reconditioning operations.

“The eruption occurred while reconditioning operations continued to produce gas from new sand (reservoir containing oil and gas) at a depth of 3,729 meters. The state oil company added that efforts had been made to evacuate local residents living near the well to safe places and arrangements had been made for their food and shelter. OIL experts have arrived at the site and every effort is being made to control the well.
