At least 24 people were killed and 12 others injured Thursday due to lightning incidents in various parts of the state, officials said.

Nine people were killed in Deoria, six in Prayagraj, three in Ambedkar Nagar, two in Barabanki, one in Kushinagar, Pratapgarh, Balrampur and Unnao due to lightning, according to an official report.

Taking note of these incidents, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of those who died in the incidents.

He also ordered officers to provide the best health care facilities for those injured in such incidents.

Eight of the injured are from Deoria, two from Barabanki and one from Prayagraj and Amethi each.

Earlier on Wednesday, three people, including a 12-year-old girl, were killed and a woman was injured in separate lightning strikes in Banda and Lalitpur districts.

On Wednesday evening, Raj Narayan, 38, a farmer, was killed when he was struck by lightning while working in his field in the village of Itwa, under the Bisanda police station.

His body was handed over to family members after a post-mortem examination, police said.

In another incident, a 12-year-old girl died and a woman was badly burned after being struck by lightning in the village of Chakora under the Baan police station in Lalitpur district.

In a similar incident in Lalitpur, a 37-year-old farmer, identified as Bhanguta, was killed while working in his field in the village of Tila below the Baar police station area.

The MET department forecast heavy rains in isolated areas of eastern UP on June 26.
