Globally, the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus has exceeded 5.3 million.

New Delhi:

The Ministry of Civil Aviation authorized charter flights to resume operations from Monday, the day when scheduled domestic passenger flights also began.

The ministry said that “non-scheduled and private operators” of fixed-wing planes, helicopters and light micro-planes could resume domestic flights starting on May 25. The ministry has also released passenger guidelines.

India has had the highest peak of 6,977 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases to 1,38,845, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare Union.

With 154 deaths reported in the past 24 hours, the total number of deaths from coronavirus now stands at 4,021.

Maharashtra remains the worst coronavirus affected state with 50,231 cases of COVID-19, followed by Tamil Nadu (16,277), Gujarat (14,056) and Delhi (13,418).

The fourth phase of the national lockdown imposed as a measure to stem the spread of COVID-19 is scheduled to end on May 31.

After this relatively small increase, the American number now stands at 98,218 lives at 8:30 p.m. (00:30 GMT Tuesday), according to the University of Baltimore, and cases of infection in the United States are now 1 662 375.

The two are the highest in the world, AFP said.
