New Delhi:

Congress paid more than Rs 12 crore to its candidates to cover expenses in the Delhi Assembly polls that took place earlier this year, according to the party’s submissions to the Election Commission.

In its statement on “partial election expenses” submitted to the voting committee in March on the “lump sum” paid to candidates in the February elections, the party said it had given Rs 12.25.00,000 to its 64 candidates, all of whom had lost some losing their security deposits.

The document, signed by the Secretary General of the Congress, Motilal Vora, was recently placed in the public domain by the EC.

Congress left part of the seats to its ally RJD in the Delhi Assembly election held on February 8 this year.

The lump sum paid to each candidate by the party varied from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. Most of the payments were made in two installments.

A candidate who runs for the Assembly in Delhi cannot spend more than Rs 28 lakh as an election expense.

There is no limit or ceiling on election expenses for political parties.

The amount paid by political parties to their candidates to meet election expenses is reflected in the declarations submitted by both to the EC after the election.

The Aam Aadmi party won 62, while the Bharatiya Janata party won the other eight of the 70 seats in the Delhi election.
