India, which has won the trust of many countries around the world, including the United States, can draw global supply chains away from China and reduce its dependence on Chinese companies, said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday.
In his virtual keynote address at the annual American Business Council in India (USIBC) ‘India Ideas Summit’, Pompeo said it was important for democracies like the United States and India to work together, especially since they see more clearly than ever the true scope of the challenges posed by the Chinese Communist Party.
“We are working very closely to ensure that the election of the World Intellectual Property Organization is won by someone who respects property rights. It seems pretty basic,” he said, in amid growing friction between Washington and Beijing over the issue of intellectual property rights.
India, Pompeo said, has a chance to draw global supply chains away from China and reduce its dependence on Chinese companies in areas such as telecommunications, medical supplies and others.
“India is in this position because it has won the trust of many nations around the world, including the United States,” he said.
At the same time, the senior US diplomat also stressed the need for India to encourage an environment “more open” to increased US trade and investment.
“But as I said last year to achieve these laudable goals, India will need to encourage an environment more open to increased trade and investment. In his speech, Pompeo praised India’s recent decision to ban 59 Chinese mobile apps, including TikTok, which he said poses serious security risks to the Indian people.
“We also had to work with India to advance the Blue Dot Network, an initiative to promote the development of transparent and high quality infrastructure,” he said, adding that this effort is crucial to adopt because free markets are the best way to lift people out of poverty. India has seen this in its own recent past, ”he noted.

The United States, he said, wants a new era of ambition in its relationship with India.

“I am convinced that our relationship is only getting stronger. Let us emerge from this current challenge more resilient and innovative than before. And seize this moment to deepen the cooperation between two of the largest democracies in the world,” he added. .
