Cyclone Nisarga is the first storm that has threatened Mumbai, the financial capital of India, for over a century.

New Delhi:

Cyclone Nisarga, which is heading for the coasts of Gujarat and Maharashtra, will turn into a violent cyclone on Wednesday and hit near Alibaug, setting off heavy rain and wind with a speed of up to 110 kilometers per hour, announced Tuesday the Indian Meteorological Department. It is the first storm in more than a century that threatens Mumbai.

“It is very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the next 12 hours. It is very likely that it will move north-northeast and cross northern Maharashtra and the southern coast of Contiguous Gujarat between Harihareshwar and Daman, near Alibagh (Raigad district, Maharashtra) during the afternoon of June 3 with a maximum sustained wind speed of 100 to 110 km / h, with gusts to 120 km / h ” , said an IMD press release.

Several cities in Maharashtra will receive heavy precipitation today.

“Cyclone Nisarga is expected to make landfall near Alibaug tomorrow. At landing, wind speed should be 100 km / h. Palghar, Pune, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad, Dhule, Nandurbar and Nashik are expected to receive heavy rain tomorrow, “said Dr Anupam Kashyapi, head of the weather and air pollution monitoring unit, IMD, Pune.

Besides Maharashtra, Gujarat, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli have also been put on alert, as parts of these two states and Union territories fall into the path of the cyclone.

Mumbai police, in a late evening order, banned people from coming to places like beaches, parks and coastal walks from Wednesday morning until noon the next day. Violators will face actions, police said.

More than 30 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in the areas expected to be affected along the coasts of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on Tuesday with key ministers from affected states to assess their preparedness for the cyclone. Interior Minister Amit Shah also held talks with Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, who is already struggling with the ever-increasing number of coronavirus cases.
