New Delhi:

Former MP serving prison sentence in 1984 anti-Sikh riot case died of COVID-19 in Delhi hospital, second Mandoli prisoner died of coronavirus, officials said today.

Mahender Yadav, 70, was a former deputy from the constituency of Palam. He was incarcerated in prison 14 of Mandoli prison, where he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, and had been hospitalized on June 26, police said.

Another convict Kanwar Singh, who died last month and who tested positive for coronavirus, was also imprisoned in prison no. 14.

Director General (Prisons) Sandeep Goel said that Yadav had complained of discomfort and heart problems on June 26. He was taken to the DDU hospital, from where he was referred to the LNJP hospital the same day and admitted there.

Later, at the request of his family, he was allowed to be transferred to police custody at a private hospital in Dwarka on June 30.

“We have received reports that Mahender Yadav died in Akash hospital on the evening of July 4,” he added.

He has been incarcerated since December 2018, according to officials.

Kanwar Singh died on June 15 in his sleep. A COVID-19 test later turned out to be positive, officials said.
