Sanjay Raut alleged that the opposition party does not want members recommended by the MVA to be appointed

Mumbai:

Shiv Sena chief Sanjay Raut on Sunday denounced to the BJP the question of the appointment of 12 members of the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the governor’s quota, saying that a delay in their appointment would amount to a violation of the Constitution and to the suppression of freedom.

In his weekly column “Rokthok” in Sena’s mouthpiece “Saamana”, Mr. Raut said that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, “the policy has not stopped”, whether at beyond the confrontation with China or the management of the coronavirus situation.

Member of Rajya Sabha said there was speculation that the appointment of 12 members of the Legislative Council on the governor’s quota could be suspended and that the “new government” (after overthrowing Maha Vikas Aghadi led by Sena) would make its own appointments after October.

“It is only a dream because there is no threat to the MVA government. The governor should stop any attempt to play politics using the constitutional post,” said Mr. Raut.

The government led by Uddhav Thackeray, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), has yet to recommend 12 names to the governor for appointment to the Legislative Council. The terms of the 12 people appointed by the governor ended last month.

Raut also denounced opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis over his comments that the BJP did not want to dismantle the MVA government, which would fall “because of its own internal contradictions”.

“He (Fadnavis) realized it after the failure of all attempts to overthrow the government. But new experiments to create obstacles before the government continues,” he said.

Raut alleged that the opposition party did not want members recommended by the MVA to be appointed to 12 seats under the governor’s quota in the upper house of the Legislative Assembly.

“The 12 members appointed by the governor will come from Congress, the NCP and Shiv Sena. The question is whether the governor will make the appointments,” he said.

Raut said the urgency imposed by Indira Gandhi has been remembered.

Interior Minister Amit Shah said “greed for family power has led to emergency imposition and violation of the Constitution and suppression of liberty”, said said Mr. Raut.

“Like the urgency, not appointing 12 members of the Legislative Council on time would be tantamount to a violation of the Constitution and the suppression of liberty,” said leader Sena, adding that all official agencies were politicized.

Raut said officials responsible for the silent swearing in of Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar (CM and DyCM respectively last year) will also engage in politics over the appointment of 12 governor-appointed members to the council legislative.

He said it was mandatory for the governor to respect
the firm’s recommendation.
