Authorities in the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday razed illegal structures built by an associate of so-called godman Namdeo Das Tyagi over an area of 15,000 square feet, a senior official said.
Tyagi, popularly known as Computer Baba, was arrested earlier as part of preventive action when the administration cleared the encroachment on government land in the village of Jamburdi Hapsi near Indore on November 8.
“When we demolished Tyagi’s illegal ashram in Jamboori Hapsi, we seized an SUV from there, and although Computer Baba was using the vehicle, it was registered in the name of Ramesh Tomar,” said Ajaydev Sharma, a other district magistrate (ADM).
There are 19 cases related to criminal conspiracy, cheating, extortion, abuse, among others registered against Tomar, he said.
“During our investigation, we found that Tomar had built a few houses in the Musakhedi region without permission from the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC),” the official said, adding that these had been demolished in police presence.
In the same area, he had also leased land from three telecommunications companies to install mobile towers, which are also being phased out, Sharma said.
Meanwhile, IMC building inspector Nagendra Singh Bhadoria said the illegal constructions undertaken by Tomar spread over an area of 15,000 square feet and included four permanent structures and two vacant lots.
He had also illegally occupied land intended for a park, which was also taken over by the administration, it was said.
Tyagi (54), who was granted Minister of State status by the BJP and Congress governments, was arrested under Article 151 of the CRPC as a precaution during the demolition of his ashram.
The godman was then convicted in two cases at the airfield police station for allegedly mistreating, mistreating and assaulting two people, including a panchayat secretary, on different occasions.
