Hamburg:

Bird flu has been discovered in another chicken farm in Germany and a program to slaughter up to 70,000 birds is under preparation, authorities said on Tuesday.

Bird flu type H5N8 has been confirmed on a farm near Rostock in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a spokesperson for local government authority Landkreis Rostock said.

About 4,500 chickens on the farm are expected to be slaughtered, but the farm has multiple locations and the total could reach 70,000, the spokesperson said.

“To tackle the epidemic of the disease and prevent it from spreading further, there is a veterinary medical need to slaughter up to 70,000 poultry in multiple locations,” the spokesperson said. . “Preparations have started.”

A series of bird flu outbreaks have been reported in Europe in recent weeks with wild birds suspected of spreading the disease.

About 16,100 turkeys were slaughtered after bird flu was found on another German poultry farm in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, authorities said on Monday.

Denmark has ordered 25,000 chickens to be slaughtered after finding H5N8 bird flu on a farm, authorities said on Monday, halting the country’s poultry and egg exports to countries outside the European Union for at least three months.

Other cases have been reported in France and the Netherlands. Britain has ordered the culling of 13,000 birds on a farm in North West England after detecting cases there.

The risk to humans of the disease is considered low, but past outbreaks in farmed birds have required intensive slaughter programs to contain them.
