Hathras case: UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered CBI investigation

New Delhi:

The alleged rape and murder of a 20-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras will be investigated by the CBI, Yogi Adityanath’s government said tonight.

The order to turn the case over to the Central Bureau of Investigation came one day when Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi visited the victim’s family in the village 200 km from Delhi.

“Chief Minister @myogiadityanath Ji ordered the CBI to investigate the whole Hathras affair,” the office of the UP Chief Minister tweeted.

Furious protests against the police and government were staged across the country, including one in the national capital of Delhi on Friday, where Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made an appearance and demanded that the four defendants be executed.

The ruling BJP, which comes under pressure over its apparent failure to prevent horrific crimes against women – at least two other assaults and rapes have been reported by the state since the Hathras affair – had previously rejected protests by the opposition as a “political coup”. .
