Billionaire Richard Branson, Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc, said on Monday that he had signed with NASA to develop a program to promote private missions to the International Space Station, boosting the company’s shares by more than 14%.
As part of its agreement with the Johnson Space Center, the space tourism company will identify entities wishing to purchase private missions and develop training modules, as well as transport, orbit and ground aids.
NASA relies heavily on private companies built around shared visions for space exploration, as it prepares for a long-term presence on the Moon and prepares for a manned mission to Mars.
The space launch system, which is expected to debut next year, is NASA’s journey to transport humans from Earth to the moon by 2024.
