Lucknow:

On Friday morning, eight Uttar Pradesh police officers, including an assistant police superintendent, were killed in a village in Kanpur to arrest one of the state’s most notorious criminals. Vikas Dubey, who has been charged in 60 criminal cases, including murders, has been arrested on several occasions but has always escaped conviction.

This time too, Vikas Dubey, who is in his fifties, would be well prepared for the police teams who plan to arrest him in a recent attempted murder.

Roadblocks have been erected along the road to the village of Bikru, 150 km from the state capital, Lucknow.

Police have started removing the blocks, including a bulldozer. When they finally reached the village, gunshots broke out on the roofs and apparently surprised them.

Eight officers died instantly and seven were injured.

Signs of the bloodbath are visible on the road that the police took to try to reach Vikas Dubey’s house.

Vikas Dubey’s criminal record started in 1990 with a murder case. Over the years, he has accumulated charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, extortion and riot.

In 2001, Dubey was charged with the murder of Santosh Shukla, a BJP chief from Kanpur who was chased and shot inside a police station. Dubey “surrendered” in 2002 but was acquitted.

On Thursday, three police teams gathered forces and went to the village to arrest Dubey in an attempted murder case recorded by a villager.

Dubey, who has political ties and was also a member of a political party in the past, is said to have an armed group of goons in his village. He is feared in the region and exerts an influence.

A plac in his village, on the site of a project, describes him as “member of Zila panchayat”.
