Police say man can challenge fine in legal system (representational)

Vienna:

Austrian police have fined a man 500 euros for breaking the wind after police arrested him earlier this month to verify his identity.

The police defended the massive fine by saying that he had deliberately issued “massive flatulence”, lifting his buttocks from the bench where he was sitting.

The accused complained of what he called the disproportionate and unjustified fine when he reported the events of June 5 on the O24 website.

In response to comments from social media that followed, police in the Austrian capital justified his reaction on Twitter.

“Of course, no one is put on the spot if one slips by accident,” said police.

However, in this case, according to the police, the young man appeared generally “provocative and uncooperative”.

He then “rose slightly from the bench, looked at the officers and clearly, in a completely deliberate manner, emitted massive flatulence in their immediate vicinity”.

Police said the man can challenge the fine in the justice system.
