Washington:

The United States has expressed the hope that India and China will peacefully resolve the disputes after at least 20 Indian soldiers have died in the deadliest confrontation of the Asian powers in decades.

“India and China have expressed a desire to defuse themselves and we support a peaceful resolution of the current situation,” said a spokesman for the State Department.

The spokesman said the United States “is closely monitoring” the situation and, referring to the announcement of losses by India, said: “We offer our condolences to their families”.

Last month, President Donald Trump said he was ready to mediate between India and China, although his administration could not provide more details on what he was offering.

The State Department spokesman said that Donald Trump had discussed the situation with China in a June 2 phone call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India is an emerging ally of the United States, which has growing friction with China on several fronts.

Alice Wells, then a senior official in the State Department for South Asia, said last month that China is seeking to upset the status quo with India and must be “resisted”.
