Washington:
The United States registered more than 53,000 new cases of COVID-19 in 24 hours Thursday, according to a count from Johns Hopkins University, a new one-day record as infections soared in the country.
The Baltimore University tracker showed an additional 53,069 cases at 8:30 p.m. (12:30 a.m. GMT), bringing the total number of cases since the pandemic reached the United States to 2,735,339.
The university also recorded 649 additional deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 128,677.
The second consecutive day of a record number of cases occurred as the United States – the hardest hit country in the world in the coronavirus pandemic – headed for the July 4 holiday weekend.
