Roorkee:

Researchers at IIT Roorkee have developed a disinfection box that can be used to sterilize personal effects, medical equipment, PPE, clothing, among others, against coronavirus.

“A team of IIT Roorkee researchers led by Professor Soumitra Satapathi, Laboratory of Nanophotonics and Integrated Biomaterials, has developed a disinfection box that can be used to sterilize a wide variety of personal effects, including equipment medical, personal protective equipment, clothing, and more, against the coronavirus, “said IIT Roorkee in a statement.

“Called the” Unisaviour “box, it includes a metal covered with a highly reflective geometry specially designed to allow the calibrated passage of UVC light to disinfect personal effects. The box has an internal coating of metal oxide developed locally with layers Herbal antibacterial and antiviral drugs to prevent the growth of microorganisms when UVC light is not being used. The user-friendly device comes with an additional safety switch for UVC light, “added the release.

“The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of maintaining overall hygiene to reduce the risk of disease transmission. The sterilization system will facilitate the disinfection of various personal effects and can be easily deployed in public places such as that shopping malls, movie theaters among others to maintain the highest level of hygiene, “said Professor Satapathi, associate professor of physics, IIT Roorkee.

The press release also states: “The” Unisaviour “box is equipped with a system programmed by Arduino to control exposure to time and the intensity of UVC light, which facilitates the sterilization of various personal effects.”

“As the world strives to return to normal amid the COVID-19 pandemic, this device will be a step forward in ensuring safety. It is easy to use and will be useful for disinfecting items in the premises audiences, “said Professor Ajit K Chaturvedi, director, IIT Roorkee

According to the press release, the other members of the team in this research include doctoral students, Prathul Nath, Naveen Kumar Tailor, Tejasvini Sharma, Anshu Kumar from the Department of Physics and Neeladri Singh Das and Professor Partha Roy from the Department of Biotechnology.

The team has filed a patent for this innovation.
