Dalpat was arrested earlier today, a week after being charged with rape in Hapur, UP.

Lucknow:

A man accused of raping a 6-year-old girl in Hapur, western Uttar Pradesh, was shot in the leg after grabbing a cop’s gun and trying to flee on Friday, said the police. Dalpat was arrested earlier today more than a week after the girl’s kidnapping and rape.

“Dalpat was taken to the crime scene for investigation where he grabbed a policeman’s pistol and attempted to shoot them. In retaliation, he was shot in the leg and was admitted to hospital,” Hapur Police Chief Sanjeev Suman said. .

Police released a photo of Dalpat earlier this week, days after three sketches – based on statements from the girl’s parents and neighbors – were made public.

The police had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 or any information about the man. He attempted to mislead police by leaving clothes and a “suicide note” beside a river yesterday, police said. In the note, the man said he was committing suicide because he did not want to die during an encounter with the police.

In recent years, Uttar Pradesh police have been accused of organizing a number of meetups – a charge that gained national attention last month after the murder of wanted gangster Vikas Dubey in an ambush that killed eight people. Police denied the meeting was rigged.

According to police, Dalpat kidnapped the girl last Thursday outside her home, less than 100 km from Delhi.

When her parents reported her missing, the police launched a search for her. She was found the next morning, unconscious and soaked in blood, behind some bushes near her village.

A medical examination confirmed the rape. The girl was taken to a specialist hospital in Meerut and underwent at least one surgery. Doctors say she is stable but not out of danger.
