United Nations to release $ 100 million in aid for seven countries (Representation)

United Nations, United States:

The United Nations said on Tuesday it was releasing $ 100 million in aid to seven countries, including Ethiopia, to help them avert famine due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ethiopia, where fighting has erupted between the central government and the northern Tigray region, will receive one-fifth of the money.

The other beneficiaries will be Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen.

“No one should regard the slide into famine as an inevitable side effect of this pandemic,” said Mark Lowcock, UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

“If this is happening, it is because the world has allowed it to happen. Famine is preventable. But we must act in time to make a difference,” Lowcock said in a statement.

“Right now, more money for the aid operation is the fastest and most effective way to support famine prevention efforts.”

On a planet where there is more than enough food for everyone, wrote Lowcock, “famines result in agonizing and humiliating deaths. They fuel conflicts and war ”.
