Washington:

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday warned Beijing of further countermeasures following what he called a “sad day”, as China imposed a sweeping national security law in Hong Kong.

“Today marks a sad day for Hong Kong and for freedom-loving people across China,” said Pompeo in a statement.

“Pursuant to President (Donald) Trump’s instructions, we will eliminate political exemptions granting Hong Kong different and special treatment, with a few exceptions,” he said.

“The United States will not sit idly by while China engulfs Hong Kong in its bossy mouth,” he warned.
