Washington:
President Donald Trump has declared that he will send part of the American troops from Germany to Poland.
Trump said last week that the U.S. would cut its workforce in Germany from nearly 52,000 currently to 25,000.
“We will probably move them (troops) from Germany to Poland,” Trump told reporters at a White House press conference on the rose garden with Polish President Andrzej Duda.
Trump was responding to a question about his decision to reduce the number of U.S. troops in Germany from 52,000 to around 25,000.
“They (Poland) asked us if we would send additional troops. They will pay for it. They will pay for sending additional troops. We will probably move them from Germany to Poland,” said Trump. .
“We are going to reduce very significantly in Germany to around 25,000 soldiers. We actually have 52,000 but we are going to reduce it to around 25,000,” he said. “Germany pays a very small fraction of what it is supposed to pay. They should pay two percent and they pay a little more than one percent depending on how you calculate. They pay less than one percent . cent, “he added.
It is a huge crime, he said, reiterating that the United States will reduce its troops in Germany.
“Some will go home and others will go elsewhere. But Poland would be one of those other places. Other places in Europe,” he added.
Responding to a question, Trump said the decision would send a very strong signal to Russia.
“A stronger signal sent to Russia is that Germany is paying billions of dollars to buy energy from Russia via the pipeline … You are giving billions of dollars to Russia, so we’re supposed to defend yourself against Russia? So I think it’s very bad … I think the German people are very unhappy with it, “he said.
Poland, on the other hand, does not accept any energy from the Russian gas pipeline.
“So that sends a signal right there. All that said, we expect to get along with Russia. We expect to get along with everyone,” said Trump.
