Two sloth bears were electrocuted after coming into contact with a wire, carrying electricity, posed by poachers on the outskirts of a village in Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, a forestry official said on Wednesday. .

Four people were arrested on Tuesday for poaching, they said.

Carcasses of the two bears, including a female, were found in the village of Chhindauli, beneath the Pithora Forest on Monday, Mahasamund Division Forestry Officer Mayank Pandey told PTI.

After being alerted, forestry officials rushed to the scene and discovered that a wire was laid there and connected to an electric wire through a transformer for the purpose of poaching wildlife, he said. .

Later, with the help of sniffer dogs from the Achanakmar Tiger Reserve, forestry staff attacked some homes in Chhindauli and the nearby village of Beldih and arrested four people on charges of poaching, he said.

The accused have been identified as Ramji Nishad (65), Nainsingh (38), both from Chhindauli, Devlal Chakradhari (30) and Jaiprakash, from Beldih, he said.

A bundle of wire and other items allegedly used by them for poaching were recovered from their possession, he said, adding that further investigation was underway.
