Beijing, China:

China said on Wednesday that a visit by a senior US cabinet member to Taiwan endangered peace and stability in the region, with relations between the two powers at historically low levels.

Washington’s de facto embassy in Taipei has said US Health Secretary Alex Azar will lead a delegation to the autonomous island, which Beijing claims to be part of China and has promised to capture one day.

“China strongly opposes official exchanges between the United States and Taiwan,” Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, said during a regular briefing.

“We urge the United States to abide by the one-China principle … to avoid seriously endangering Sino-US relations, as well as peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”

The United States transferred diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979.

He remains the main supplier of arms to the island, but has always been cautious in his official contacts with him.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the trip and said Azar will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen.

Neither party has indicated the date of the trip in their statements.
