President Donald Trump was criticized during the recent wave of protests.

Washington:

Former Pentagon chief Jim Mattis on Wednesday issued a pungent reprimand from his former boss, Donald Trump, accusing the president of trying to “divide” America and failing to provide “mature leadership” then that the country recover from days of demonstrations.

Mattis, who resigned in December 2018 following Trump’s decision to withdraw his troops entirely from Syria, also expressed support for protesters whose protests against racism have troubled the country.

“Donald Trump is the first president in my life who doesn’t try to unite the American people – doesn’t even pretend to try,” wrote Mattis in a bloated statement posted online by The Atlantic.

“Instead, he is trying to divide us,” said the retired Marine general, who previously argued that it would be inappropriate for him to criticize a serving president.

“We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership,” he said.

Mattis described himself as “angry and dismayed” after witnessing the events of the past week, which saw Trump threaten military repression as nationwide protests turned violent in some cities.

The fury was ignited by the May 25 murder of George Floyd, a black man who suffocated under the knee of a white cop, and whose excruciating death was filmed by passers-by in footage that quickly went viral.

Most of the protests were peaceful, but some escalated into violence and looting after dark.

Mattis wrote that the protesters’ call for equal justice was a “healthy and unifying demand – a requirement that we should all be able to support.”

And he lambasted the decision to use force to expel peaceful protesters near the White House on Monday to allow Trump to pose for photos at a nearby church.

The photoshoot has become a lightning rod to criticize Trump’s handling of the crisis, religious leaders, politicians and spectators across the country expressing outrage.

“When I joined the military some 50 years ago, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution,” says Mattis.

“I have never dreamed of soldiers taking the same oath being convicted under any circumstances of violating the constitutional rights of their fellow citizens – much less of providing a bizarre photo op to the elected commander-in-chief, with military leaders alongside . “
