Lead police on new suspect is “very important”: Madeleine Mccann’s family

The parents of Madeleine McCann, who disappeared in Portugal in 2007 at the age of three, said Thursday that the announcement of a new suspect was a potentially very important development in their daughter’s global hunt for 13 years.

McCann disappeared from his room on May 3 during a family vacation in the Algarve while his parents were dining with friends nearby in the resort of Praia da Luz.

British and German police on Wednesday called for information on a German sex offender currently incarcerated in Germany. He was 30 years old at the time of McCann’s disappearance.

“Kate and Gerry think this is potentially very important,” the family spokesperson, Clarence Mitchell, told BBC radio. “They have never given up hope that she can still be found alive, but they are realistic.”

“Whatever the outcome of this investigation, they need to know what happened to their daughter in order to find peace and bring anyone responsible to justice,” said Mitchell.

Police wish to speak to anyone with relevant information about a 43-year-old man whom he did not name, or about the movements of two vehicles linked to him during the period surrounding the girl’s disappearance . The two cars, a Volkswagen camper van and a Jaguar, are now in the possession of the German police.

The suspect, according to German police, lived in the Algarve between 1995 and 2007 – and for several years in a house near Praia da Luz – and robbed of hotels and holiday apartments as well as the drug trade.

German police said the man had “been repeatedly sentenced to prison terms for child sexual abuse in the past”.

They said they treated the matter as an alleged murder and determined the method used to kill McCann. They did not believe the murder had been planned and said the man was involved in crimes such as break and enter and burglary.
