African-American man’s sister died shortly after white Minneapolis police officer caught him with one knee by the neck called for justice Wednesday, saying four officers were fired during the incident murderer was not enough.
The four officers were dismissed from the force on Tuesday, the day after the death of 46-year-old George Floyd, who lived in the suburbs of St. Louis Park, Minnesota. A video taken by a spectator showed Floyd lying face down on the street, breathless and moaning, “I can’t breathe” Monday evening.
“They murdered my brother. They killed him. They have to put more pressure on these guys. Firing them is not enough,” Bridgett Floyd told Good Morning America on ABC.
The police were not immediately identified by the Minneapolis Police Department, and it was not known if any of them had retained a lawyer.
The Minneapolis Federation of Police Officers, the union that represents the city’s police force, was not immediately available for comment.
The case was reminiscent of the murder of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man in New York in 2014, who died after being placed in a police constriction and saying to the police: “I cannot breathe”.
The incident was part of a series of murders of black men by American police who fueled the “ Black Lives Matter ” movement, which combats violence and systemic racism against black people.
Thousands of protesters took to the streets around the scene of the deadly incident during a noisy rally on Tuesday, many of whom wore face covers to protect themselves from the spread of the new coronavirus.
The rally took an unruly turn at dusk as riot police fired tear gas and non-lethal beanbags into the crowd, while demonstrators threw bottles of water and other projectiles, a reported the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
“It was nine minutes on his neck,” lawyer Benjamin Crump, held by the family of Floyd, told ABC on Wednesday. “Imagine what George Floyd endured during those nine minutes, begging for breath, begging for life.”
