Mumbai:

Sushmita Sen says she can’t be part of “something regressive” as an actor and that’s why the web series Aarya, which marks his return to acting after a decade, called him.

The actor said she had offers before the show, but they weren’t as “appetizing and interesting” as her role in the Disney + Hotstar series. The show begins broadcasting from June 19.

“I don’t think the women of today in India are ‘bechari‘. If you want a show in the present time, you cannot do something regressive and I, for my part, will not work in this scenario. I can’t work in something regressive, I never will, “Sen told PTI in an interview.

The Bollywood star has said that she wants to align with inspirational stories.

“It doesn’t always have to be breathtaking like the central characters are, but I can’t do something inspired and give six months of my life unless it contains substance to inspire people, “Sen, whose last Hindi film was Anees Bazmee’s 2010 film No problem, said.

In the show, the actor plays the role of Aarya Sareen, a happily married woman whose world turns upside down when her husband (Chandrachur Singh) is shot dead. She learns that he may have been involved in a racket of illegal drugs which now threatens his family.

The 44-year-old actor said that Aarya was “an author-supported role” where she could play as a woman who stands up when put in a difficult situation. “When you look at Aarya, it is not an extraordinary woman who does extraordinary things. She has a lot of courage and conviction but she was placed in places where she did not want to be.”

Sen said that often in cinematographic representation, women are put in direct competition with the man to show them stronger, which is not necessary.

“There are strengths that women have … it makes her a hero by virtue of the emotional strength she carries. She has a brain that can be as loving and generous as it is manipulative. You don’t want to play with a woman if she made up her mind. “Some of the nuances of the character come from her own life as a mother to daughters Renee and Alisah,” she said.

“I am very much at Aarya. As a mother, I am very protective of my children. I am not a picky mother. I can be a task mom, just like Aarya and this aspect was brought by Sushmita to Aarya. There is a lot of fighting in Aarya which is still something that I have in abundance in me. “

The web series, which is based on the Dutch series Penoza, is co-directed by Ram Madhvani, Sandeep Modi and Vinod Rawat. Sen said Madhvani, best known for his biopic on Pan American stewardess Neerja Bhanot, did not see the characters by gender.

“In the season one of Aarya, he’s invested a lot in character creation, including that of Aarya, where you don’t go from a housewife to a gift like that. There is a natural progression.

It is in season two that she takes the seat, “she added.

The former Miss Universe said the creators have prepared plans for the show’s next seasons, which also include Sikandar Kher, Ankur Bhatia and Namit Das.

“Gradually, we have written five seasons and each season, the character keeps getting stronger and more exciting,” she added.

The response to the trailer for Aarya has led to more attractive offers, said Sen.

“With Aarya, this has changed. Now the offers and scripts I receive are brilliant. In the future, we should have more content focused content, “said the actor.
