Dissident group district chief among dead, police said (representative)

Dhaka:

At least six tribal activists were ambushed on Tuesday by a rival group in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, where dozens have died in an insurgency in recent years, police said.

Armed men attacked supporters of a dissident group of the Jan Sanhati Samiti (JSS) insurgency movement in Bagmara, Bandarban district, about 400 kilometers southeast of the capital Dhaka, according to officers.

The district chief of the dissident group was among the dead and three others were seriously injured, SM Mobassher Hossain, deputy chief of police in Bandarban, told AFP.

JSS is the main group of insurgents in the three hill districts of Chittagong in Bangladesh which include Bandarban.

He fought a battle against government forces that claimed the lives of around 2,500 people in the region from the early 1980s until the signing of a peace treaty in 1997.

Despite agreement and withdrawal of most troops from the region, unrest has continued as tribal groups demand the implementation of key clauses in the agreement, including the dismantling of villages of Bengali settlers and camps military.

In recent years, insurgent groups have dissociated, sparking fighting that has claimed the lives of several faction leaders.

In March of last year, seven people were killed in a battle in Bandarban.
