The monuments protected by the ASI in Delhi have been reopened to the public in accordance with the instructions of the Ministry of Culture.

New Delhi:

Qutub Minar, Humayun’s tomb and a host of other centrally protected monuments in Delhi were reopened to visitors on Monday after being closed for more than three months due to the COVID-19 crisis, officials said.

All guidelines, including social distancing and sanitation measures, will be followed at these heritage sites. The mask will be mandatory and no one will be able to enter without it, said an official.

There are 173 monuments in Delhi protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). It includes three UNESCO World Heritage sites – the Red Fort, the tomb of Humayun and Qutub Minar – and the tomb of Safdarjung, Purana Quila, the fort of Tughlaqabad and Firoz Shah Kotla.

“The Delhi monuments protected by the ASI have been reopened to the public according to the instructions of the Ministry of Culture. However, the Red Fort, which is closed every Monday on regular days, will remain closed today,” said the responsible.

Visitors can book tickets in one of two slot machines – the afternoon machine, which starts in the morning and ends at noon; and afternoon slot from noon to 6 p.m. In each slot, a maximum of 1,500 visitors will be allowed, according to the official.

On regular days, said the official, Fort Rouge obtains an average daily attendance of the order of 8,000 to 12,000; Humayun’s tomb gets 6,000-10,000 and Qutub Minar 8,000-10,000. However, Humayun’s tomb attracts more foreign visitors, they said.

No less than 3,691 monuments and archaeological sites with central protection maintained by the ASI were closed as of March 17 due to the new pandemic of coronavirus.
