Jayaraj and son allegedly severely beaten by police for breaking lock rules

New Delhi:

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi expressed sorrow and regret over the death of Jayaraj and his son Fennix in Tuticorin on Sunday after being beaten by the police and demanding justice.

He said he could not visit Sathankulam, where the incident occurred last week, to personally comfort the family, due to the situation of COVID-19.

In a text message to members of the party’s Shakti platform in the Tuticorin district, Rahul Gandhi said, “Let us act until those responsible for this (death) are punished.”

“I have been wronged and regret the action by the police responsible for the deaths of Jayaraj and Fennix,” he said, according to a statement from TNCC chief KS Alagiri.

He urged members to light a candle at 7 p.m. today to mark the memory of the “deceased brothers” and pay tribute to them.

“I was unable to come and comfort (the family) in person because of the COVID-19 situation,” he added.

P Jayaraj and his son Fennix, arrested for “violating” lock standards during the opening hours of their mobile phone store, died in a hospital in Kovilpatti on June 23, their relatives claiming to have been severely beaten by the police at Sathankulam Police Station.

The incident sparked a national outcry, leading to the suspension of four police officers, including two sub-inspectors.

Chief Minister E Palaniswami said on Sunday that the government had decided to transfer the death probe to the Central Investigation Office.
