Nepal said on Sunday that 90% of its coronavirus cases are migrant workers who have returned from abroad, mainly from India, while the country’s count is approaching the 10,000 mark with 421 new cases.

The virus has now spread to 75 of the country’s 77 districts, the ministry of health said.

Confirmation of 421 new cases increased the number of coronavirus infections in Nepal to 9,026.

Dr Basudev Pandey, director of the Department of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Health, said that 90% of coronavirus cases in Nepal are migrant workers, who have returned from abroad, mainly from India, and 98% from infected people had no symptoms.

Of the 421 new cases, 64 are women while 357 are men, the health ministry said in its daily press conference.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday has risen to 23 following the death of a paralyzed 69-year-old patient who recently returned from India after treatment, said the spokesman for the Ministry of Health.

On Sunday, 194 cases of recovery were reported, including eight women and 186 men. With this full recovery, cases reached 1,772, including 149 women and 1,623 men.

Currently, 7,231 patients with coronavirus are currently on treatment in various hospitals across the country.
