The statement came a few days after the arrest of a man posing as a naval officer.

Kochi:

Taking serious note of incidents of men using naval uniforms or badges to pose as naval officers in Kerala, the Indian navy said on Saturday that it would contact the state government to ask it to ban the unauthorized sale of uniforms of the armed forces in the state.

The theft of the identity of military personnel by third parties is a recognizable offense and those who engage in such activities would be subject to strict measures to avoid that anti-national elements use this method for hidden reasons, which constitute a potentially serious threat to national security, the navy. said in a statement.

The Navy noted that the district administrations of Kutch (Gujarat) and Srinagar, as well as the government of Punjab had issued orders prohibiting the unauthorized sale of uniforms of the armed forces under section 144 of the CrPC.

“The Indian Navy is taking a similar case with the state government of Kerala to prohibit the unauthorized sale of uniforms of the armed forces in Kerala,” the statement said.

The Navy statement came days after a 23-year-old man was arrested by police in Kochi for allegedly acting as an officer (lieutenant) in the Indian Navy.

Raja Nath, from Nadia, West Bengal, was arrested on July 1, based on information from the Navy that the man was traveling to various locations in naval uniform. He also allegedly posted videos in TikTok posing as a naval officer.

Mr. Nath, who arrived here in October of last year, lived in an apartment in Thevara.

He had had uniforms sewn in Kochi stores. Police said a case was registered against him under section 140 of the IPC for posing as an Indian naval officer and also recovered uniforms and navy badges from his residence.

He was then released on bail. A similar incident was also reported earlier at Thevara police station against a man identified as Nibit Daniel for having impersonated an Indian navy commander.

He also had uniforms sewn locally.
