Geneva:

The global coronavirus pandemic is accelerating, the World Health Organization said Wednesday, noting that June has seen more than half of all cases reported since the start of the pandemic.

“Over the past week, the number of new cases has exceeded 160,000 every day,” said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus during a virtual briefing.

“So far, 60% of all cases have been reported in the past month,” he said.

With more than 5 11,000 deaths and more than 10.5 million known infections worldwide, the coronavirus pandemic is “not even close to over,” warned WHO earlier this week.

Tedros reiterated that taking a “holistic approach” was the best way to contain the virus.

Countries that have implemented a wide range of measures, including contact tracing, isolation, physical distance and wearing a mask “have eliminated transmission and saved lives,” he said.

The United Nations Health Agency is therefore very concerned, he said, that a number of countries “have not used all the tools at their disposal and have adopted a fragmented approach.

“These countries face a long and difficult road,” he said.

He stressed that if the pandemic poses a scientific challenge, “it is also a test of character”.
