Bombay:
Maharashtra opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis on Friday criticized the 10,000 crore aid of the government led by Uddhav Thackeray to those affected by the rain, saying the announcement “betrays” the confidence of farmers.
Earlier today, the chief minister announced Rs 10,000 crore in aid to people affected by the rain in the state, including farmers, and said relief would be provided by Diwali.
Referring to requests made by Uddhav Thackeray during last year’s crop loss, when he was a BJP ally, Mr Fadnavis said: “Previously, Mr Thackeray himself had asked for financial assistance between 25,000 and 50,000 rupees per hectare for farmers affected by rain. He even demanded compensation of Rs 1 lakh per hectare. But today’s announcement has betrayed the confidence of farmers. “
The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government was showing the budget provisions as a special package and trying to misrepresent aid to farmers, the BJP chief alleged.
“It is a bad excuse to point the finger at the Center for not helping the state at a time of a natural crisis. It is an attempt to hide the failure of the MVA government,” he said.
In announcing the relief package, Thackeray asserted that the government of Maharashtra has yet to receive a total of around Rs 38,000 crore from the center.
Heavy rains and flooding last week killed several people in the Pune, Aurangabad and Konkan divisions and also damaged crops of several thousand hectares.
