A case of unnatural death has been registered and a judicial investigation is underway into the death in custody of Intyaz Ali, also known as Intazul Laskar, the Inspector General of Police (IG) said on Saturday. Mizoram, John Neihalaia.
On November 1, Intyaz Ali, alias Intazul Laskar, was arrested by volunteers from the Young Mizo association while he was trying to sell drugs. While trying to flee, he sustained ankle injuries. Later, excise officers seized 420 mg of heroin and arrested him. Mr. Neihalaia told reporters.
The police official said Ali was generally weak and died at the Vairengte community health center on November 2.
“As this is a death in custody, the post-mortem was carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the National Commission for Human Rights (CNDH). Non-natural death case registered. A judicial inquiry is also underway. The body was handed over to his brother, ”added Neihalaia.
Ali’s relatives reportedly refuted the allegations and said he was a firewood collector.
