Final results of the ICMR serological survey in May are still being developed

New Delhi:

On Thursday, the ICMR announced that a national serological survey to determine the population’s exposure to the new coronavirus would be carried out as a follow-up to a similar study conducted in May, the results of which have not yet been published.

The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) will conduct a “ serological survey ” which involves testing people’s blood serum to check the prevalence of antibodies to coronavirus infection.

Rajesh Bhushan, special duty officer in the Union’s Ministry of Health, said on Thursday that the final results of the May ICMR serological survey of infections in mid-April, were still in progress.

“The ICMR serological survey across the country focused on infections in mid-April and preliminary results have been shared.” So this process is underway, “he told journalists.

“We will be able to share it once it is finished,” he said.

The ICMR had previously declared, on the basis of data compiled in 65 districts out of 83 districts of the country in the first part of the sero-surveillance study, that 0.73% of the population questioned showed evidence of exposure passed to SARS-CoV- 2.

Bhushan further stated that the results of the serological survey, which was carried out in Delhi by the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) in which 22,000 samples were collected from June 27 to July 5 in 11 districts, are being processed.

“In the near future, the ICMR is planning a pan-India serological survey to follow up on their previous serological survey for infections in mid-April,” said Bhushan.

The sero-survey carried out in May had two parts – to estimate the fraction of the general population which was infected by SARS-CoV-2 and to estimate the number of people who were infected by the coronavirus in the containment zones of the cities of hot spots, ICMR officials had said earlier.

IgG antibodies to infection take around 15 days to develop in the body.

India experienced a record one-day increase of 24,879 coronavirus infections, which pushed the national COVID-19 total to 7,67,296 Thursday, while the number of deaths climbed to 21,129 with 487 new deaths, showed data from the Ministry of Health updated at 8 o’clock.
