Beijing:

Heavy rains and landslides in China have left at least 14 people dead or missing in the past day, burying homes and temporarily shutting down scenic areas.

Six people have been inaccessible since a landslide in southwest Guizhou province hit three villages on Wednesday, local officials said.

At least 156 people were relocated and six who were trapped had to be rescued after the incident.

Photos of the scene showed rescuers dressed in bright orange uniforms painting through mud and rubble in the mountainous areas of the town of Tongren, where the infrastructure had been heaped up.

Authorities said 19 houses were buried and 60 others damaged.

At least 120 people died or missing this year in China as a result of flood disasters on July 3, the People’s Daily reported, adding that direct economic losses amount to some 41.6 billion yuan ( $ 5.9 billion).

Different regions of China have been hit by continuous torrential rain since June, the damage adding pressure to a national economy already affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Another landslide in the early hours of Wednesday in central Hubei province buried five houses and nine villagers.

Eight of them eventually died, public television CCTV announced on Thursday.

Some scenic areas have been forced to close temporarily for security reasons, with Mount Sanqing closing to visitors due to recent showers and the risk of landslides and other disasters in the area.

In addition to affecting tourism, students from all over China who took the grueling college entrance exams this week also struggled to reach the test sites on time as the floodwaters covered the streets. In certain regions.

On Wednesday, local rescuers using loading trucks, inflatable boats and ropes transported students to test sites in central Hubei province.
