Beijing, China:

A knife attacker injured 37 students and two adults at a primary school in southern China on Thursday, officials said. Local media identified a security guard as the author.

All the victims, including the teaching staff, were sent to the hospital but were not in danger of death, said authorities in Cangwu County, Guangxi region.

The incident at Wangfu Central Primary School occurred at 8:30 a.m., when the children normally arrived in class. The attacker, who is said to be around 50, was “under control,” the government said.

“37 students suffered minor injuries and two adults suffered more serious injuries. All were sent to hospital for treatment, and none of their lives are in danger,” the report said.

Schools in the area did not reopen until May after being closed for months due to the coronavirus epidemic.

A number of schools in China have been hit by attacks in recent years, forcing authorities to tighten security amid calls for further research into the root causes of these acts.

In November, a man climbed a kindergarten wall in southwest Yunnan Province and sprayed people with corrosive liquid, injuring 51 of them, mostly students.

Last September, eight schoolchildren died and two others were injured in a “school-related criminal case” in central Hubei province, with a 40-year-old man arrested.

A man with a knife killed two people and injured two others at a primary school in central Hunan province last April.

In April 2018, a man killed nine college students on their way home in one of the deadliest knife attacks in China in recent years.

A homemade explosive killed eight people and injured dozens of people outside a kindergarten in Jiangsu Province in June 2017.
