Bhubaneswar:
A local court in Bhubaneswar held a midnight hearing on Thursday and decided to send an army major, arrested in a dowry torture case, into military custody instead of jail.
Subdivisional Magistrate’s Court (SDJM) judge SK Mishra attended court at 10 p.m. after failed attempts to hold the hearing by videoconference. The hearing continued after 1:30 a.m.
At the end of the hearing, the judge ordered that the arrested major be sent to military detention instead of prison.
Previously, the Mahila police station arrested the major on the basis of his wife’s allegation of physical and mental torture for dowry and attempted murder. The army officer was staying in the Nayapalli area of Bhubaneswar.
A case was registered against the army officer at the police station under various articles of the Indian Penal Code and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
The officer reportedly threatened his wife to shoot him to death if she did not bring money to her parents.
The wife in her complaint said that although the matter was settled by mutual agreement earlier, her husband continued the torture. Although the police served notice on the Major, he did not respond. On Thursday he was arrested by police.
