Delhi’s iconic Jama Masjid may close again due to increased COVID-19 cases in the city

New Delhi:

Jama Masjid in Delhi may need to be closed again due to “deteriorating” city conditions due to COVID-19 pandemic, Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari of the mosque said today .

The development comes after the death of the secretary of Shahi Imam Amanullah because of a coronavirus at the Safdarjung hospital on Tuesday evening.

Delhi on Tuesday registered 1,366 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the number to 31,309, while the death toll reached 905, authorities said today.

“He (Amanullah) tested positive and was admitted to Safdarjung hospital on June 3, where he breathed his last yesterday,” said Bukhari.

The Shahi Imam said that the opinion of the population had been sought on the closure of the mosque again due to the increase in the number of new cases of coronavirus in the national capital.

“People are commenting on social media and other channels on closing Jama Masjid. We can close it again for people and limit ‘namaz’ to a few people in a day or two,” said he declared.

The mosque had opened on June 8 after an interval of more than two months with the government authorizing new relaxations within the framework of “Unlock-1”, the first phase of a calibrated exit of the new national locking induced by the coronavirus .

“I also asked other small mosques to ask people to stay at home and offer them“ namaz ”instead of going to the mosques. What is the point of visiting mosques at a time when the spread of the coronavirus is peaking in Delhi, when we have not done so even during Ramzan and Eid due to the lockdown, “said Mr. Bukhari .

As religious places and several other establishments, such as shopping malls and offices, opened across the country on June 8, Bukhari asked governments to reconsider their decision given the rapid spread of the coronavirus.
