Chennai:
Unable to control the growing coronavirus numbers, the government of Tamil Nadu has once again declared a total foreclosure of the state capital Chennai and certain areas below, including the districts of Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu districts, June 19 to 30.
Tamil Nadu has the second highest number of cases – just behind Maharashtra – and the peak continued despite several restrictions imposed by the state government.
More than 70% of the 44,661 cases of Tamil Nadu coronavirus originate from Chennai, where the infection is raging in urban slums. On Sunday, Chennai registered 1,415 new cases, registering a total of 31,896 patients.
Sources said the foreclosure of Chennai and its suburbs will be intense and that full restrictions will apply on both Sundays during this period. No taxi, car or private transport will be allowed to circulate, except in an emergency. People will need to buy essential items within a 2 km radius. Only the operation of hospitals, laboratories and pharmacies will be authorized.
Banks will only be allowed to operate with 33% staff on June 29-30.
Essential services, including milk, vegetable and fruit stores, mobile outlets and groceries, will be open. Fuel pumps will be allowed to operate between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. Take-out from restaurants will be allowed between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Amma’s canteens will also remain open and construction workers will be able to stay on site.
The quarantine rules for incoming passengers from other states or abroad will remain the same and the movement of cargo will be uninterrupted, the government said.
