Legal action underway, said Kolkata police (representative)

Kolkata:

A 42-year-old man who lived in Bangalore with his wife and son today flew to Kolkata and shot his mother-in-law at his home in an upscale apartment complex. His stepfather fled the apartment, locking him behind him as he cried out for help.

The police arrived to find both the mother-in-law and the man lying dead inside. They also found a suicide note in which he confessed to also killing his wife before traveling to Calcutta to commit the second murder.

Bangalore police rushed to the man’s home in the Whitefield area of the city and found the wife’s body.

Amit Agarwal was a chartered accountant and had been married to Shilpi Dhandhania for several years. They had a 10-year-old child but were separated and on the verge of divorce, police said.

Mr. Agarwal came to his in-laws’ apartment in the Phoolbagan area of Kolkata at around 5.30 p.m. There was a lively discussion. An apparently agitated Agarwal then released a pistol and shot his stepmother, Lalita Dhandania, at close range.

A terrified stepfather, 70-year-old Subhash Dhandania, rushed out of the apartment, locked it behind him, and ran to his neighbor for help.

By the time the cops arrived, Ms. Dhandhania was lying dead and Mr. Agarwal was lying in a pool of blood with his pistol on the floor near the bed.

The police then came across a suicide note in which Mr. Agarwal stated that he had also killed his wife in Bangalore. Police in the capital of Karnataka were immediately informed and, soon after, the Whitefield DCP confirmed the murder of the wife.

Lawsuits are underway, Kolkata police said.

Details of Mr. Agarwal’s son’s whereabouts are not being disclosed, but Kolkata police have confirmed that he is safe.
