Regional bus services were interrupted on Monday (representation)

Bayonne, France:

A bus driver in France was declared brain dead on Monday after being attacked by several people whom he refused to leave on board because they did not wear face masks as required during the coronavirus epidemic.

A police source in Bayonne, near the chic seaside resort of Biarritz in southwest France, said that a person was in police custody and that other suspects were wanted.

The individuals attempted to board the bus on Sunday evening without tickets or masks, which are compulsory on public transport across France.

When the driver, in his 50s, tried to prevent their entry, he was repeatedly struck in an assault that resulted in serious head injuries.

He was unconscious when transferred to hospital, and doctors declared him brain dead Monday, the police source said.

Regional bus services were cut on Monday after several of the driver’s colleagues refused to work to protest the brutal attack.
