Former Union Minister Arjun Charan Sethi died in hospital on Monday of a brief illness, family sources said. He was 79 years old.

Sethi was admitted to the private hospital on Sunday evening, they said.

Eight times a member of the Bhadrak Lok Sabha constituency, Sethi was Minister of Union Water Resources in the NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee from 2000 to 2004.

Active in the social and political spheres since his youth, the soft-spoken Sethi has also been elected to the Odisha Assembly twice.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condemned Sethi’s death, describing him as a veteran parliamentarian and a competent administrator.

Born September 18, 1941, Sethi was elected to the Lok Sabha of the constituency of Bhadrak in 1971 and 1980 as a candidate for Congress.

He was re-elected in the same constituency in 1991 with a Janata Dal ticket and won the seat in the subsequent elections of 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009 as candidate Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

In view of the simultaneous elections of the Assembly of Lok Sabha and Odisha held in 2019, Sethi had left the BJD and joined the BJP with his son Abhimanyu Sethi.
