Geneva:

Ebola is spreading in western Democratic Republic of the Congo, with nearly 50 known cases in a large region bordering the Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced Monday.

Since authorities announced the epidemic on June 1, 48 cases have been confirmed in Equateur province of the Congo, with three other probable cases and a total of 20 deaths, said the country’s largest emergency expert. ‘WHO, Mike Ryan.

“This is still a very active epidemic, and I would say it is still a big concern,” said Ryan during a press briefing.

The province includes part of the Congo River, he said, adding that it was a large geographic area where communities were linked and people traveled long distances.

“I would like to warn everyone that if the numbers for this event are low, again in the era of COVID, it is very important not to leave the eyes of these other emerging diseases and we have seen in the North -Kivu and other previous Ebola outbreaks that these can get out of control very easily, “he said.

Ryan was referring to a separate outbreak of Ebola in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu in eastern Congo, declared last month. This epidemic, the second largest, recorded 3,463 confirmed and probable cases and 2,277 deaths in two years.
