US President Donald Trump plays golf at Trump National Golf Club on Saturday.

Sterling:

What does a president do when he is on the verge of electoral defeat, in the eyes of the whole world?

If you are Donald Trump, you are going to play golf.

The president left the White House on Saturday morning as the last crucial vote counts were about to arrive from Pennsylvania and a few other states on the battlefield.

Already lagging behind Democrat Joe Biden in the all-important state-by-state electoral college vote tally – the writing on the wall was becoming impossible to ignore.

So Trump, who is known to hit the Ties regularly, crossed the Potomac River to Trump National Golf Course in Sterling, Virginia.

Trump was there when major U.S. television networks – first CNN then NBC, CBS, ABC and finally Fox – said new results from Pennsylvania had pushed Biden to the top – and the White House, in January.

He was also present when his office released a provocative statement saying Biden was “rushing to pose as the winner.”

But Trump seemed determined to project a sense of thoughtless serenity when he wrapped up his tour in the afternoon. (No score was announced.)

Seeing a wedding couple posing for photos outside the clubhouse, the president offered to join them, videos posted to social media.

Dressed in dark gray pants, a gray jacket, and a basic white “Make America Great Again” hat, he was indulging in what appeared to be a light joke.

As he walked away, several people shouted at him, “We love you! We love you!”

Afterwards, as thousands of exultant Biden supporters celebrated loudly outside the White House and elsewhere in the U.S. capital, Trump’s motorcade made its return to the White House.

The president had nothing else on his schedule on Saturday.

Perhaps a little consolation for the avid golfer: Golf Digest magazine once said that Trump should be seen alongside John F. Kennedy as the “best golf president in history.”
