Coronavirus lockdown: a long line of cars and bikes on the Delhi-Gurgaon border

New Delhi:

A massive traffic jam blocked the road between Delhi and Gurgaon this morning after the Haryana government decided to seal the roads going to Delhi, concerned about the increase in cases of highly infectious coronavirus.

Earlier this morning, hundreds of people who were prevented from crossing the Delhi-Gurgaon border demonstrated on the road after cars were allowed to cross the barricades without control.

Protesters asked why they were not allowed to move when vehicles freely crossed the border. A group of people on bikes, mostly workers, blocked the road for a while. Traffic has stopped behind them and there is excitement.

As the crowd began to grow, some police officers were seen on visuals trying to persuade them to go home.

An hour later, the checkpoint was completely sealed for everyone, including motorists, except those involved in essential services.

Delhi-Gurgaon border: workers demonstrate after being banned from crossing the border

Coronavirus cases have increased in districts that border the nation’s capital, Haryana Interior Minister Anil Vij said Thursday.

“The main reason behind the outbreak is the entry of people from Delhi into the areas of Haryana that share its border with Delhi,” he said.

“In the past week, Faridabad has reported 98 cases, Jhajjar has reported six cases, Sonipat 27 and Gurugram 111. With the exception of categories for which flexibility has been granted by the High Court and the Interior Ministry , the interstate border should be sealed., “he added.

Just two weeks ago, the Delhi High Court had to intervene and order Haryana to authorize those involved in essential services to travel between the state and Delhi and to lift special restrictions at its borders.

The Haryana government is committed to ensuring that essential services workers, including doctors, nurses, police, those working in courts and municipal agencies will be allowed between Delhi and Haryana if have electronic passes.
