New Delhi:

The BJP accused Congress on Thursday of “taking advantage of the challenges” the country is currently facing, and said the opposition party is carrying out “political slanders” that are “unfortunate but expected”.

BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani’s hard-hitting counterattack against Congress came after opposition party president Sonia Gandhi pointed at the Modi government, saying the whole country had heard the cries of pain of the migrants, with the exception of the Center.

Gandhi also urged the Center to unlock its safes to help those affected by the coronavirus-induced lockout.

Reacting strongly to Ms. Gandhi’s remarks, Ms. Irani said: “It is unfortunate that when the nation must unite against the COVID-19 pandemic, some political parties seek to benefit from the challenges facing the country”.

Allegating that Congress was playing petty politics and trying to “break” the determination of the country, said the minister, she is shocked by the attempts of certain leaders of the opposition parties to take stock of the political situation in the name of the pandemic.

Irani, who defeated Congress chief Rahul Gandhi in the latest polls in Lok Sabha, said that the governments of all states, including those run by Congress, are “witnesses and have benefited” from the crore of Rs 1. , 76 lakh “PM Garib Kalyan Yojna”.

The program has supported some of the weakest segments of our society, she added.

“In this hour of crisis, the Center and the states, including the district authorities, have converged their efforts. And for Congress, at the present time, engaging in political slander is regrettable but expected,” said Ms. Irani.

This “humble policy” of Congress is “reprehensible,” she said, adding that the party cannot be expected to contribute constructively to the development of the nation.

The President of Congress in a video message published as part of his party’s “Speak Up India” campaign, launched on Thursday, also demanded that the government provide 7,500 rupees to each family in need for the next six months.
