Bangkok:

A single mother in Thailand does business with face screens with characters from cartoons, games and science fiction movies, hoping to cash in and promote the safety of children as her country emerges from the coronavirus pandemic.

From her small studio, Maysa Talerd, 31, has carefully designed patterns and pasted stickers of famous fictional superheroes and villains on face screens, in an effort to mix security and style and expand her new business .

“Normally, a face shield is transparent, so people can get bored. With these fun designs, they will encourage people to wear them,” she said.

“At least with the cartoon characters, the kids will want to wear them and show their friends to school.”

Orders pour in for shields with the faces of Darth Vader and his Stormtroopers from the Star Wars movies to Japanese superheroes Mobile Suit Gundam and the heroes, villains and figures of Thai folklore.

Thailand is gradually relaxing restrictions to boost its economy, while maintaining strict social distancing measures to prevent infections.

It has registered 58 deaths to date and 3,125 confirmed cases – the majority of which have recovered – and has not reported local transmission for 17 days.

A few months ago, Maysa had no income but is on the verge of being financially stable, receiving orders of 50 to 100 shields at a time, which she sells for 180 baht ($ 5.77) each.

“I think it could become the main income for me in the future because the toy stores are contacting me to do wholesale business,” she said.
